Fall Newsletter 2019

Tree of Life hosted two Back-to-School Giveaways in Leesburg and Purcellville over the past two Saturdays that ministered to
568 people.  Many came to receive free clothes, free backpacks and haircuts to get ready to go back to school.  We were also able to communicate about Tree of Life’s other ministries, which include reaching out to the poor and needy in our community in the areas of food, lifeskills, shelter, healthcare and relief.

The Back-to-School Clothing Closet is part of our Shelter Branch, which helps with clothes, home repair projects and transitional housing for many in need.

Many thanks to Pastor Giovanni from Crossroads Baptist Church and Pastor Jacob Baum from Loudoun Valley Baptist Church for participating and sharing a gospel message.

One of Tree of Life’s core values is 'Community is our front line.'  We are thankful for the many people in our community who donated clothes and funds to make these awesome events for the people who were served.

By: Paul Smith, Executive Director

In 2018, a wonderful family friend passed into eternity. Donna Barkley battled with cancer for many years, but never lost her vigor for life. I asked Donna a few years ago to consider a role as Volunteer Coordinator for Tree of Life. She was enthused and ready to dive in. Unfortunately, her cancer returned soon after and she was unable to move ahead with the new role.

One of my life verses is found in Psalm 78 – ‘We will not hide them from their children, we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders He has done.’

In July, Donna’s daughter (Lilli) and her husband (Rich) organized a golf tournament in Donna’s memory. Tree of Life was one of the beneficiaries with a wonderful gift of $2500. Rich asked that the funds be used to help accommodate a young mother and her kids in one of our housing apartments.

Donna's legacy continues to take shape beyond her life on this earth. The next generation in her family know of her passion for Christ and compassion for others. We may not fully understand the path of life, but during the time we have together, never forget to tell the next generation of the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders He has done. When we finally meet Him face to face, the impact of telling the next generation will be clear and our true legacy understood. Blessings, Paul Smith Executive Director, Tree of Life Ministries

Each Tree of Life Mentor will be volunteers who will come alongside a Tree of Life Partner to lead them on their journey through life in spiritual mentoring and life skills coordination.

Each Partner’s goal receiving mentoring will be to draw closer the Lord and growing in their ability to gain in life skills that will help them navigate life’s challenges.

If you would like to be considered as a TOL Mentor please email Wayne Ruckman

Gil Paist, Chief Program Officer

Nearing retirement I was contemplating various endeavors and heard Paul speak of TOL at a Blue Ridge Bible Church morning service. Interestingly, I was supposed to be involved in another church function and not in the church service…and Paul sat in front of our family. TOL was not new to our family. My wife, Laurie and daughters, Breana and Brittany, are involved with food deliveries and the housing ladies program. Paul and I talked after the service and after a further meeting I accepted an invitation to sit in TOL executive meetings to ponder where I my skills would fit. The “fit” became the Chief Program Officer (CPO).

As CPO I work at a high level on the recruitment, training, retention, and recognition of volunteers, as well as partner care programs. Other items tend to get thrown into my realm now and again. Over the past year I observed the passion and concern for Christ’s command to help the poor and needy among the TOL volunteers and staff.  Adherence to TOL values combined with outstanding work ethics, creativity, and message to glorify God in all things makes TOL a truly unique organization. Accidentally being in a church service turned out to be a wonderful and busy life changing event.

Jordan Smith, Development Officer

Jordan Smith joins the team as the new Development Officer for Tree of Life Ministries, Inc. In his new role, Jordan will focus on creating and sustaining relationships with local churches, businesses, and individuals who share the mission with TOL. Jordan joins us upon his return to the Loudoun County Region from England where he has spent the last four years. Originally born in Manchester, England, Jordan is a big Manchester United fan and enjoys frequent trips back to England to visit family and specifically the gorgeous Lake District.

Jordan has a variety of experience professionally, from Financial Planning to Account Management to most recently being a Carer to disabled adults and young people with behavioral and emotional challenges. Jordan cares deeply for others which is a big driving force behind his work. Outside of work, you will find Jordan at Church, on a trail cycling/hiking, watching sports, hanging out with family or friends, and eating chocolate. Jordan’s life verse just so happens to be John 10:10 rather fittingly.  Jordan is excited for the future of TOL & is happy to be on the team! He believes together, we can all make a difference, for Him!
